Case Study: Workplace Safety & Prevention Services
Summary
WSPS, one of Ontario’s largest health and safety associations, partnered with Saige to replace its old, PDF-heavy website with a new, easy-to-use, and fully accessible digital platform. The focus was on accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA), smooth content migration, and tools that are easy to maintain.
Platform: Contentful
Challenge
The WSPS site had hundreds of regulatory documents in PDF format that weren’t accessible or mobile-friendly. There were no tools for different user roles, so updates were slow. The organization also faced legal and usability issues due to AODA non-compliance.
WSPS needed a single solution that would:
Meet current accessibility standards
Make it easier for users to find what they need
Allow customization of information by region or industry
Reduce the internal effort needed to manage and update content
How We Delivered
Accessibility & AODA Compliance
We built the website to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards. All features like menus, accordions, and popups were made usable by keyboard and screen readers.
Our process:
Used Stark for Figma to check color contrast and focus highlights
Used axe DevTools and WAVE to test accessibility
Did manual keyboard and screen reader testing with NVDA and VoiceOver
Converted PDF content into proper HTML with headings, lists, and simple text
Structured Content in Contentful
We created a custom setup in Contentful that made it easy for WSPS to manage content:
Built reusable content types for chapters, alerts, forms, etc.
Added rules to keep content consistent and accessible
Used tags and metadata to improve search and filtering
Added support for multiple languages in the future
Set user roles and permissions to match WSPS’s internal team structure
Editor Experience & Workflows
Instead of editing whole pages, WSPS editors now build content from ready-made parts:
Chapters are created automatically with built-in navigation
Notes and alerts can be reused on many pages
Banners and announcements can be scheduled or removed automatically
Training and Support
We trained WSPS staff in three separate sessions for different roles:
General editors (updating content and navigation)
Department leads (publishing workflows and approvals)
Communications team (SEO and homepage updates)
Training included:
Live demos on a test site
Hands-on exercises to create and publish content
A checklist for publishing accessible and structured content
Stakeholder Collaboration
Held meetings with key team members to understand user needs
Created and refined wireframes together using FigJam and Figma
Let WSPS editors test workflows and report accessibility issues
Designed a shared governance plan for content ownership and reviews
Results
AODA Compliance: Achieved full WCAG 2.1 AA compliance (confirmed internally and by a third-party)
Content Control: Over 10 departments now manage their own content without needing developers
Better Experience: The new website is faster, mobile-friendly, and fully accessible for all users
